There’s a lot to love about the winter season, especially if you enjoy the comforts of staying indoors where it’s warm and catching up on some favorite hobbies. But inevitably, cabin fever can start to set in after a while and many of us are counting down the days until we can breathe in the fresh air of spring. While our homes are keeping us warm from the frigid winter outside, the inside air can become stuffy, dry and unpleasant. Fortunately, indoor plants can provide more than just something pretty to look at—they can also help freshen that stale indoor air!
Using Plants for Cleaner Air
Back in 1989, NASA conducted its Clean Air Study to research the effects of plants in enclosed environments. Scientists discovered that certain plants could help filter out pollutants, therefore improving the quality of air. Some of the plants included in NASA’s study were English ivy, Chinese evergreen and weeping fig. You may want to consider these questions when selecting these or other air-purifying plants:
- How many plants do I need? It’s recommended to have at least two decent-sized plants for every 100 sq feet of your living space.
- What kind of sunlight does my home have? Think about where you want to place your plants to ensure they’ll be getting enough sunlight. Certain greenery, such as a rubber plant or the lady palm, are good choices for low-light areas.
- Do my plants need humidity? Winter air tends to be extremely dry, so you may need to adjust watering or add humidity for some plants.
